Precipitation Hardening & Age Hardening Services in Plymouth, MI
Age Hardening to Strengthen Your Metal Units
Precipitation hardening, sometimes called age hardening, is a heat treatment process that strengthens metals and most alloys of aluminum, magnesium, nickel, titanium, and stainless steel.
The process of precipitation hardening works by using precipitates or solid impurities to help strengthen the metal material, specifically improving the tensile and yield strength. RMT ages the metal by either heating it or storing it at low temperatures. Both options require several hours to produce precipitates. These precipitates slow or stop the movement of dislocations in the crystal lattice of the metal. The precipitates that form through the heating or storage become fundamental to the hardening process. By the end of the unit going through aging, it will be able to more easily and successful go through future machine work.
Age Hardening Industrial Applications
- Engine parts
- Fasteners
- Gate valves
- Shafts, gears, plungers
- Valve stems
- And in general, for metal parts and components which require an increased yield strength
RMT Offers Experienced Age or Precipitation Hardening
Knowing the correct temperature and duration for precipitation to occur takes a level of experience that the team at RMT has. Our shop can avoid part distortions, enhance wear resistance, and improve tensile and yield strength while reducing ductility.
